Este ensayo aborda las claves estéticas de las estancias de Marcel Duchamp en España y especialmente en Cadaqués, donde contó con un anfitrión de excepción, Salvador Dalí, con quien compartió algo más que una simple amistad: la misma posición crítica ante la historia del arte, resolviéndola por caminos formalmente distintos. Desde la presentación en Barcelona del Nu descendant un escalier en 1912 hasta su último proyecto de chimenea anaglifa pocos meses antes de su muerte, en 1968, Duchamp mantuvo una especial relación con Cadaqués. Pasajes inéditos de esa íntima vivencia del lugar, que Duchamp ocultaba bajo su aparente indiferencia y ensimismamiento jugando al ajedrez, se revelan en esa intrahistoria de la obra duchampiana que transcurre en España. Aquí resuelve y termina su último trabajo, Étant donnés, que cierra un importante capítulo de la teatralidad en la pintura y el arte.
